How to Prepare Your Child and Yourself for "The First Visit"
Tell your child that they are going to a special place where we look at their teeth and count them. Avoid using threatening words like drill, x-ray, needle, etc. Try not to say things like "don't worry, it won't hurt," or "Don't be afraid." The more you try to reassure your child the more they may feel that there is really something to worry about. Be casual and relaxed in your own attitude about the visit. Children are very sensitive to the moods and feelings of their parents and this will definitely effect their reaction to the visit. This may be difficult for you especially if your own experiences with dentistry have been unpleasant, but remember your child will feel the way you feel. Many children behave extremely well in our treatment situation because it is designed to build trust and confidence thereby reducing anxiety and promoting a positive experience.
